- Nasdaq 100 index futures led gains on Wednesday, with SpaceX and Super Micro Computer’s results reigniting enthusiasm for AI trading, while Netflix declined as its earnings guidance failed to meet investor expectations.
- Elon Musk’s rocket and space technology company rose about 9% in pre-market trading after he said a merger between SpaceX and Tesla would be a “good idea,” and the company also reported its first profit since going public. Tesla climbed about 2%.
- A senior analyst at an institution believes SpaceX’s AI business has significant growth potential. AI infrastructure is capital-intensive, and SpaceX has more resources than many smaller companies. If AI demand increases, SpaceX may acquire the infrastructure businesses of smaller competitors.
- The analyst added that if both companies can demonstrate that synergies create value for both sides, a merger might be a good idea. However, if investors believe it would be better for Tesla to pursue AI synergies with other companies, the merger could be rejected.
- Other space stocks also moved higher, with gains ranging from 2% to 4%.
- Super Micro Computer surged about 13%; the AI server manufacturer’s quarterly revenue and profit margin guidance both exceeded Wall Street expectations, indicating strong AI demand. Peers Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Dell both rose more than 4%.
- Investors found reassurance in these results, following previous concerns around the profitability of AI infrastructure that had triggered a sell-off in AI-related stocks. Data center operator CoreWeave, at the heart of the turmoil, rose about 2% in pre-market trading.
- Most chip stocks were up, with Nvidia, Intel, and AMD all gaining between 1.5% and 2.3%. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index had previously fallen for eight straight sessions, its longest losing streak in 18 years.
- Netflix dropped more than 6% as its Q4 profit guidance came in weaker than expected, and after cutting about 6% of its workforce in recent days. Meta and Tesla are set to report results after the close.
- Oil prices remained elevated, with Brent crude futures above $110 per barrel, near a five-month high. Last week’s data confirmed price pressures are seeping into the U.S. economy and spreading beyond energy, which supports the case for another Federal Reserve rate hike. The central bank will meet next week.
