Shifting Trends in Safe-Haven Currencies

Traditionally, when investors think of safe-haven currencies, the U.S. dollar, Swiss franc, and Japanese yen come to mind. These currencies have long been considered reliable stores of value during times of global uncertainty or economic instability. However, recent developments have challenged this perception, as these currencies themselves have become more volatile.

Throughout 2025 and into 2026, both the dollar and the yen experienced significant declines. While the Swiss franc appreciated, this posed difficulties for Switzerland, which depends on exports and maintains very low inflation. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump’s introduction of tariffs in 2025 disrupted international trade, triggering a wave of selling in American assets and fueling a “sell America” trend.
