Trends in the 10-Year Treasury Yield
Over the past several years, the yield on the 10-year Treasury has fluctuated, occasionally rising above 4.5% but more frequently dipping below 4%. Despite these movements, it has generally hovered near an average of 4.2%. This level aligns closely with what is considered the neutral rate for the 10-year Treasury yield.
To put it simply, when both the federal funds rate and inflation are near their neutral points, it is reasonable to expect the 10-year yield to reflect that neutrality as well. At present, the federal funds rate stands at 3.64%, which is slightly above the neutral benchmark. However, market expectations suggest a gradual shift back toward neutral levels in the near future.
