UK Payrolled Employee Trends
According to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) administrative records, the number of payrolled employees in the UK dropped by 96,000 (0.3%) between January 2025 and January 2026. However, there was a slight increase of 6,000 (0.0%) from December 2025 to January 2026.
Examining the period from November 2025 to January 2026—which aligns with Labour Force Survey (LFS) data—shows a yearly decline of 109,000 employees (0.4%) and a quarterly decrease of 31,000 (0.1%).
Preliminary figures for February 2026 indicate a reduction of 49,000 payrolled employees (0.2%) compared to the previous year, but a monthly rise of 20,000 (0.1%).
