Sector Update: Energy Stocks Gain Late Afternoon

03:49 PM EDT, 10/06/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Energy stocks rose late Tuesday afternoon with the NYSE Energy Sector Index and the State Street Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLE) each adding 0.6%. The Philadelphia Oil Service Sector Index fell 1.2%, and the Dow Jones US Utilities Index gained 2.2%. West Texas Intermediate crude oil rose 0.3% to $89.70 a barrel, and global benchmark Brent advanced 0.6% to $100.93 a barrel. Henry Hub natural gas futures climbed 1.9% to $3.123 per 1 million BTU. In sector news, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to temporarily allow tax-free dyed diesel to be used on highways as part of his administration's efforts to lower fuel costs. The move is aimed at tackling elevated diesel prices and tightening global supplies. In corporate news, Alphabet's (GOOGL) Google entered into a 20-year deal with Constellation Energy (CEG) to add 890 megawatts of nuclear power to the PJM interconnection grid. Constellation shares surged 12%. Vistra (VST) shares jumped 11%. The company secured a conditional loan commitment of up to $4.2 billion from the US Department of Energy to fund nuclear plant upgrades and modernization in Pennsylvania and Ohio. Energy Transfer (ET) agreed to buy Vaquero Midstream in a bolt-on deal valued at about $2.63 billion. Energy Transfer shares rose 0.2%. Exxon Mobil's (XOM) oil and gas prospects are advancing off the coast of Trinidad and Tobago, the Financial Times reported, citing an interview with John Ardill, the company's head of global exploration. Exxon shares rose 0.5%.
