Update: Market Chatter: Southwest Airlines Leans Toward Boeing 787 for Potential Long-Haul Service
MT newswire2026/10/09 17:5201:52 PM EDT, 10/09/2026 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates with Southwest Airlines' response in the fourth paragraph) Southwest Airlines (LUV) is leaning toward Boeing's (BA) 787 Dreamliner as its first widebody aircraft for potential long-haul international service, Reuters reported Friday, citing people familiar with the plan. No final decision has been made, the report said. One of the people told Reuters the airline has considered a fleet of dozens of 787s. Southwest, which currently operates an all-Boeing 737 fleet, has also examined obtaining aircraft through lessors or the secondary market, which could allow it to begin long-haul service sooner, the report said. "Southwest Airlines has made clear our intentions to continue listening to customer feedback and to satisfy their evolving needs, including initiatives like lounges and aspirational destinations. We have no forthcoming news about our fleet plans," a Southwest Airlines spokesperson told MT Newswires in an emailed statement. Boeing didn't immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment. (Market Chatter news is derived from conversations with market professionals globally.
